I don’t know about you, but I need a break. So, despite the fact that the world of AI will likely look very different in January, this is the last roundup of the year.
So, let’s jump in.
This week’s issue: 9 stories
The AI anxiety meter: Mild
How long to read: 15 minutes
1. Not so fast…we haven’t turned the calendar over just yet. 2023 was the year of AI. Here are the nine moments that defined it. (A lot of which we covered here!)
2. The first all AI-generated newscast. Anchors, stories. All of it. There is no way to write this in a way that conveys the mind-blowing nature of this story, so just read it!
3. The U.S. government is going all in on AI. However, a government watchdog says it lacks a plan. (No biggie.)
4. Judges in the UK can now use ChatGPT to write rulings.
5. Microsoft partners with labor unions on AI training as job loss worries mount. I feel like this should be getting more attention than it is.
6. Speaking of Microsoft. The FTC is looking into Microsoft’s $13B investment into OpenAI to see if it violates antitrust laws.
7. Sam Altman opens up. The OpenAI CEO (again) was interviewed at the ‘A Year in Time’ event. (Altman has been name Time’s CEO of the Year.)
8. Google is rolling out new AI models for healthcare.
9. And, finally…Google dropped this right after last week’s edition, the surprise launch of Gemini.
Thank you for reading. Your interest. Your sharing. I’m so happy this has taken off, and people watching all of this are thinking… “Wait, what’s happening? This is moving fast?! Say what now?!” enjoy having these stories all in one place.
Have a great holiday and see you in 2024!
As a reminder, this is a round-up of the biggest stories, often hitting multiple newsletters I receive/review. The sources are many…which I’m happy to read on your behalf. Let me know if there’s one you’d like me to track or have questions about a topic you’re not seeing here.
